Introducing Hawa Koroma
The Action Africa Team raises awareness and money to help empower women in sub-Saharan Africa to start their own small businesses within their communities. In this way, they become capable providers for their families and thus help strengthen their communities.
Meet Hawa Koroma! She is the woman in the photo above. She is the first woman in a line of 50 women who gathered to sign up for Action Africa’s Women Enterprise Program in Lunsar, Sierra Leone in July 2012. Action Africa’s Executive Director, Susan Hoefling, was there on location to innaugurate this new phase of the program. Also in attendance was the local program coordinator, retired Councilman, Steven S. Bangura. For the women, it was a day to remember.
Hawa is now a trader at the local market, selling onions, peppers, salt, and whatever else is in season. It is a mini-grocery store – presented on one table! Hawa is so very grateful to Action Africa for offering her the start-up capital of $75. Now she has a reliable source of income that supports her family, and lets her cover her children’s school expenses.
Hawa is not working alone. Action Africa structures its program so that these women work in groups. They support each other, hold group meetings, and share success practices and stories of their various businesses. They soon learn to expand their businesses and open doors to others.
When you join us for our Taste of Africa Dinner-Fundraiser on October 21, you will be helping to raise awareness and funds to reach and teach other women like Hawa on how to start and grow their own businesses and in some other cases, farm better and improve their harvests. This way, they become stronger pillars of their families and village communities.
Our guests at the dinner on October 21 will have the opportunity to listen to our Keynote Speaker, retired Redskin, Charles Mann, enjoy our variety of drinks and a full meal. There will also be a raffle and a first view of a new short Documentary featuring Action Africa’s program impact in Sierra Leone.
We look forward to seeing you there.
